About
As an artist
Hi! I’m Grace Chen, a senior at Shanghai American School, where I channel my passion for art into exploring themes of identity, culture, and female experiences. My creativity often leads me to experiment with various mediums like oil painting, printmaking, and photography, resulting in work that challenges viewers to reflect on deeper societal issues. I’ve had the honor of receiving numerous accolades, including a Scholastic Art & Writing Silver Medal, alongside 3 Gold Keys, 3 Silver Keys, and 4 Honorable Mentions. In the future, I’m excited to push the limits of contemporary art and discover new, compelling ways to convey my message.
My work is deeply influenced by my background in art history, global travels, and community service. I’ve engaged in research that spans from Qing Dynasty art to modern societal issues, and I use these insights to inform my creative process. I believe that art should not only reflect the artist's inner world but also connect with broader human experiences. Whether I’m creating a mixed-media piece on social media’s impact or a painting that captures fluid identity, my goal is to create work that is both visually compelling and socially meaningful.
